Abstract
MIREMAR Presentation Terrance P. Long: An International Approach to Underwater Munitions
Munitions can be found in every ocean of the world and they are in many of our fresh water lakes, rivers and streams. In total more than 40 countries are concerned including Baltic countries where the Baltic Sea requires special considerations due to its small size, shallow depth, young geologically age and almost stagnant.
In recent years about 40,000 tonnes of chemical munitions were reported dumped in the Baltic Sea after World War II. Mr. Long will discuss the International Dialogues on Underwater Munitions and how they serve as a premiere global forum for underwater munitions information exchange on the topics of policy, science, technology and economics of investing in our marine resources.
Mr. Long will discuss the background and the important to understand the history of underwater munitions, to explore relationships among international stakeholders and to build on the experiences and information that will be shared in forums, workshops and international commissions. Mr. Long will discuss his own experiences in his native land of Canada and some of the ongoing international activities on underwater munitions.
